Smart Waste, Cleaner Puducherry: ₹110 Cr Project Kicks Off

The Union Territory of Puducherry is set to implement an Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) project aimed at revolutionising urban waste practices. A pilot launch began on 01 June in Chief Minister N. Rangasamy’s Thattanchavady constituency and the Raj Bhavan, with full-scale operations scheduled to commence on 01 July.

Valued at ₹110 crore and supported by ₹18.76 crore in Central capital subsidy under the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, the project has been awarded to Green Warrior Agency (GWA), which will take over from Swachhata Corporation after its services conclude on 30 June. GWA will oversee the entire waste management cycle—including door-to-door collection, source segregation, processing, composting, recycling, and biogas generation.

The initiative focuses on decentralised waste management by phasing out community bins. The Kurumbapet dump yard is undergoing a major upgrade, featuring mechanised segregation and a 60-tonne-per-day pyrolysis plant capable of producing 12–15 tonnes of refuse-derived fuel daily. Additionally, a ₹25-crore, 100-tpd compressed biogas (CBG) plant will generate 2.5 tonnes of biogas each day. The facility will also recycle plastics and produce paver blocks for industrial use.

Legacy waste remediation and supporting infrastructure development are in progress across the 23-acre project site.
