₹646 Crore Later, Coimbatore Still Waits for 24x7 Water

Coimbatore’s ambitious 24×7 water supply project has once again missed its deadline, primarily due to slow execution by the French firm Suez Projects, which is implementing the initiative for the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC).

The ₹646.71-crore project, launched in 2018, was originally scheduled for completion by June 2023. However, it has faced repeated delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, labour shortages, and quality-related issues. Although the deadline was later extended to August 2025, the project has failed to meet this revised timeline as well.

While nearly 90% of the work has been completed, several wards continue to lag behind, triggering frustration among residents and councillors. Prolonged road damage and incomplete House Service Connections (HSCs) have been key concerns.

In response, CCMC has taken over the execution of certain pipeline installation works and imposed penalties amounting to ₹68.4 lakh on Suez for the delays. CCMC Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran stated that efforts are underway to complete the remaining works by February–March next year.
