₹20 Crore per MW: The Cost of JSW Energy’s Nuclear Future

JSW Energy plans to commission its first nuclear power plant by 2030 and is evaluating multiple reactor technologies, including large-scale reactors and small modular reactors (SMRs).

Speaking at India Energy Week in Goa, Neeraj Agarwal, President – Nuclear Energy at JSW Energy, said the company is assessing options such as 700-MW pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) as well as larger 1,000-MW reactors. He noted that the final choice of technology and plant configuration will depend on assurances around timely execution and effective cost control.

As part of its strategy, JSW Energy intends to develop a pilot plant initially to gain operational experience before expanding capacity. The company is also in the process of identifying a suitable site, with multiple locations under evaluation, though specifics remain confidential.

According to JSW Energy, nuclear power project costs are estimated at ₹16–20 crore per megawatt, varying with the selected technology and scale. Construction will commence once land acquisition and technology selection are completed, with adherence to project timelines being a key priority.
