Pune's New Metro Lifeline: Nigdi to Chakan

Discussions between the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) and the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) on the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed 42 km Nigdi–Chakan Metro corridor are in the final stages, with the DPR expected to be submitted to the state government shortly.

Envisioned as a key public transport lifeline, the fully elevated metro line will connect major areas of Pimpri Chinchwad, including Nigdi, Nashik Road, Bhosari, Moshi, and the Wakad Bypass, extending all the way to Chakan, a prominent industrial and logistics hub.

"Following submission of the draft to PCMC, our teams have engaged in detailed discussions with civic officials, and the proposal is now nearing finalisation," said Hemant Sonawane, Executive Director, Maha Metro.

The corridor will feature 31 stations and will become Pimpri Chinchwad’s third metro route, following the operational 17.5 km PCMC–Swargate line and the under-construction 4.6 km PCMC–Nigdi stretch. The route is designed to meet growing commuter demand amid rapid urbanisation and will serve key locations such as Mukai Chowk, Wakad, Tathawade, Nashik Phata, Modhi, and Chakan.

Once approved, the project is expected to significantly improve urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and support sustainable development in one of Maharashtra’s fastest-growing regions.
