India’s largest integrated power utility, NTPC Limited, has reached a significant milestone with its group capacity rising to 89,378 MW following the successful commissioning of the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP).
The milestone comes after THDC India Limited, an NTPC subsidiary, declared the Commercial Operation Date (COD) for the fourth and final 250 MW unit of the 1,000 MW (4x250 MW) Tehri PSP. The unit is set to commence commercial operations from 00:00 hours on April 12, 2026, marking the full operationalisation of the project.
With all units now commissioned, the Tehri PSP—one of India’s key pumped storage projects—will function as a large-scale energy storage system, effectively acting as a “giant battery” for the northern grid. It will provide critical peak load support and enhance grid stability, especially as renewable energy sources such as solar and wind continue to expand.
Following this development, NTPC Group’s total installed capacity has increased to 89,378 MW, while its commercial capacity has reached 88,298 MW.
The company stated that this achievement underscores its leadership in the power sector and highlights its strategic focus on diversifying its energy portfolio, particularly through investments in flexible generation and renewable energy-supporting infrastructure.
