The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has engaged private sector companies to partner in developing indigenous small modular reactors (SMRs), outlining a commercial and financial roadmap at recent industry consultations.
Designed to generate up to 300 MWe through nuclear fission, SMRs utilize compact, factory-assembled modular architectures that streamline quality assurance, shorten construction timelines, and allow incremental deployment.
The Tarapur Atomic Power Station site in Maharashtra—home to India’s pioneer commercial nuclear units and robust existing nuclear infrastructure—has been greenlit by the Atomic Energy Commission. It is designated to host the lead units of two domestic SMR lines: the 220 MWe Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR-200) and the 55 MWe SMR-55, both engineered by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) alongside NPCIL.
