Power Play: NTPC's Bold Move into Nuclear Energy

NTPC Ltd. is moving forward with its nuclear energy expansion strategy, aiming to develop nuclear power projects through a combination of joint ventures and standalone initiatives, Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh confirmed at the Bihar Business Connect 2024 summit.

As part of its long-term clean energy roadmap, NTPC is actively engaging with nuclear technology providers and state governments to identify project opportunities. The move aligns with the company’s goal to diversify beyond fossil fuels and strengthen its low-carbon energy portfolio. Currently, the NTPC Group has an installed capacity of 82,926 MW, spanning coal, liquid fuel, hydro, and solar sources.

Singh emphasized that nuclear power will play a critical role in India’s energy mix over the next 20–30 years, particularly as the country transitions to cleaner, more reliable sources of baseload power.

In December 2024, NTPC formally announced its strategic entry into the nuclear sector. It has since operationalized Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd. (ASHVINI)—a joint venture with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL), in which NPCIL holds a 51% stake and NTPC 49%.

Additionally, NTPC has established a dedicated nuclear subsidiary, NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam Ltd., further reinforcing its commitment to developing clean, reliable, and scalable nuclear power as part of India's broader energy transition strategy.
