The Union Civil Aviation Ministry has received no communication from the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government in Tamil Nadu regarding the status of the proposed ₹27,000-crore greenfield airport at Parandur.
Ministry sources confirmed that the Centre remains unaware of whether the state plans to proceed with or pause the project. "We have not received any intimation from the State government about their plans for the second airport," a source stated, noting that the Centre has already granted the necessary site clearance and approvals for the land acquisition process. Because these central approvals are already in place, ministry officials emphasized that the project's future now rests entirely with the state government.
This clarification follows rising speculation about the fate of Chennai's second airport under the new TVK administration. Recent remarks from senior state ministers emphasizing that development cannot compromise environmental concerns have led to widespread rumors that the Parandur project might be shelved or relocated to an alternative site.
