The Ministry of Coal launched the 12th tranche of commercial coal mine auctions in New Delhi on March 27, 2025, reinforcing its commitment to boosting domestic coal production and strengthening India’s energy security. The event was attended by Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, as the Chief Guest, and Union Minister of State, Satish Chandra Dubey, as the Guest of Honour.
This auction includes 25 coal mines under the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015 (CMSP) and 18 under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 (MMDR), along with two lignite mines to meet diverse energy needs. Of the 43 mines on offer, 13 are fully explored and ready for immediate development, while 12 are partially explored, presenting long-term investment opportunities.
Additionally, three mines from previous commercial coal mine auctions have been reintroduced. These mines are located across key coal and lignite-bearing states, including Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Rajasthan.
This initiative aims to attract new investments, promote sustainable mining practices, and enhance private sector participation. The event also featured the signing of agreements with successful bidders from the previous tranche, underscoring the Government’s commitment to transparency, efficiency, and industry collaboration.
