NDMC Plans Smart Water Future for Lutyens' Delhi

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has launched the process to develop a 25-year Water Masterplan for Lutyens’ Delhi, aiming to modernize its aging infrastructure and ensure long-term water sustainability. Tenders to appoint a consultant for the comprehensive study were issued on June 20, with the selection expected to be finalized by July 15, according to NDMC officials.

NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Chahal stated, “The new masterplan will focus on upgrading the water supply system and expanding the 24x7 water supply model,” which is currently being piloted in the Vinay Marg and Moti Bagh areas. Key objectives include improving water sustainability, reducing leakage, upgrading supply lines, and implementing a smart metering network linked to a centralized SCADA system.

NDMC currently supplies water through a 450-km pipeline network to approximately 15,970 residential and 3,157 commercial consumers. To support this effort, the civic body recently approved a ₹31 crore project to replace 5,397 faulty mechanical water meters with advanced smart meters.

Serving a core population of 250,000 residents and a floating population of up to 2 million, the area presents unique challenges due to its historical infrastructure. While NDMC sources raw water from the Delhi Jal Board, it operates as an independent utility within its jurisdiction.
