Mumbai’s Lifeline: The Rs 2,241 Crore Manori-Kandivali Water Tunnel

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has awarded a Rs 2,241 crore contract to Afcons Infrastructure to construct a 7.175-km water tunnel linking the upcoming 200 MLD Manori desalination plant to Kandivali.

Running from Manori (Malad) through Charkop to Mahavir Nagar (Kandivali), the 2.5-metre diameter tunnel and its pumping station are engineered for an ultimate capacity of 400 MLD (starting at 200 MLD for Phase 1). Scheduled for completion in 45 months, the project will seamlessly integrate with Mumbai’s existing water supply grid to boost urban water resilience and reduce reliance on conventional freshwater sources.
