The Indian government will invest ₹4,500 crore over the next three years to modernise the Mohali-based Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL), Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced during a device-handling ceremony.
SCL, an autonomous institution under MeitY, is the country’s only integrated device manufacturing facility capable of providing end-to-end solutions for ASICs, opto-electronics, and MEMS devices. To support its expansion, the Centre has requested a 25-acre land parcel from the Punjab government. The upgrade forms a key component of the ₹76,000-crore India Semiconductor Mission, with SCL already issuing tenders to onboard vendors for the modernisation programme.
At the event, the Minister distributed 28 chips designed by various institutions and startups, all fabricated at SCL using its 180 nm technology node. The facility has so far received 94 chip design submissions under the government’s Chips-to-Startup initiative, along with two additional designs developed in collaboration with DA-IICT and VIT.
