Major Milestone: Pune Metro Line 3's 13km Section Opening Soon!

The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is set to open a 13-km section of Metro Line 3—from Megapolis Circle to Balewadi Phata—by September this year, officials confirmed.

The full 23.3-km Metro Line 3, under construction since November 2021, is being developed through a public-private partnership (PPP) between PMRDA and Pune IT City Metro Rail, a consortium led by Tata Group and Siemens. The line will ultimately include 23 stations and is being built in two phases. A 14-km stretch from Maan to Balewadi Phata is expected to undergo trial runs and limited operations later in 2025.

“Metro construction in India typically takes 8 to 14 months per kilometre, meaning a 23-km line would normally require over four years. PMRDA’s progress has been significantly faster,” a senior PMRDA Metro official noted.

During the first trial run conducted on the actual line, PMRDA Commissioner Yogesh Mhase remarked, “Testing until now was confined to the depot. This marks the first trial on the main corridor, bringing us closer to public operations.”
