Maharashtra's ₹6,600 Crore Maritime Makeover

The Government of Maharashtra has unveiled an ambitious plan to develop six marine shipyard clusters along its coastline, targeting ₹6,600 crore in private investments and the creation of 40,000 jobs by 2030.

The initiative is being spearheaded by the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), which has shortlisted Nandgaon (Palghar), Dighi (Raigad), and Vijaydurg (Sindhudurg) for the first shipyard cluster. A consultant will soon be appointed to carry out a techno-economic feasibility study, which will include site evaluation, engineering and financial analysis, and environmental and social impact assessments.

Among the shortlisted locations, Nandgaon is the largest with 2,666 acres, followed by Dighi (2,550 acres) and Vijaydurg (1,371 acres). “The consultant will help us determine the most feasible site among the three,” said Pradeep P, CEO of MMB.

The project is backed by Maharashtra’s Shipbuilding, Ship Repair, and Ship Recycling Policy, 2025, which offers a 15% capital subsidy, R&D support of up to ₹25 crore, skill development incentives, and concessional land leases to attract private investment and accelerate maritime industrial growth.
