The Nagaland Cabinet has taken key decisions regarding oil and natural gas exploration in the state, reiterating its resolve to proceed in accordance with the special provisions granted under Article 371A of the Constitution.
Government spokesperson and minister K. G. Kenye said that although the issue had earlier become contentious and was taken to court, the matter has now been cleared for progress following the withdrawal of the case by the concerned organisation. The Cabinet reaffirmed that all natural resources, including petroleum and natural gas, belong to the landowners and the people of Nagaland, with the state government acting on their mandate and consent.
Kenye noted that while petroleum and natural gas fall under the Centre’s jurisdiction in other states, Nagaland enjoys distinct constitutional rights over its resources under Article 371A.
To advance the process, the Cabinet has also constituted a sub-committee under the Political Affairs Committee to engage with the Centre on exploration-related and regulatory matters, underscoring the state government’s proactive approach to harnessing its energy potential.
