The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced the launch of the ‘Greater Agartala’ urban development initiative, aimed at transforming the city’s infrastructure and administrative footprint over the next two decades. The project will bring together 51 municipal wards and 49 gram panchayats under a unified urban framework.
Following a key meeting on 11 July 2025, Mayor Dipak Majumder confirmed that the Master Plan for the city’s expansion is nearing completion. “This is the first time Agartala is getting a structured master plan,” the Mayor said, adding that the initiative began after the BJP-led government came to power in 2018. “It will provide a blueprint for metro corridors, overbridges, roads, and industrial zones, shaping the city's long-term growth.”
Founded in 1838 by Maharaja Krishna Kishore Manikya Bahadur, Agartala’s civic administration was formalised in 1871 under Maharaja Chandra Manikya, with AWB Power, the British Political Agent, as its first chairman. The last major expansion occurred in 2004, increasing the city’s area from 16.01 sq. km to 62.02 sq. km.
The 'Greater Agartala' plan is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility, infrastructure planning, and service delivery, positioning the city as a modern regional hub.
