Kolkata's Tech Future: GlobalFoundries Sets Up R&D Hub

US-based semiconductor major GlobalFoundries is set to begin operations in Kolkata by late September 2025, with the launch of Research & Development and testing facilities, according to West Bengal IT & Electronics Minister Babul Supriyo. The facility, spanning approximately 13,000 sq. ft., will be located in the Software Technology Park of India in Salt Lake.

The move follows the announcement of the GF Kolkata Centre during the 2024 meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden. “Once the space is handed over, R&D will begin as the first phase, with more stages planned, including a high-potential Fabrication Laboratory,” said the Minister.

The Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub is rapidly emerging as an investment hotspot, with over ₹30,000 crore in commitments from major players such as Reliance Jio, Adani, LTIMindtree, and TCS, all of whom have acquired land in the area. Several data centres are also on track to commence operations.

Additionally, eastern India’s first cable landing station is set to be established in Digha, further strengthening Bengal’s strategic position in the tech and digital infrastructure landscape. State policies for semiconductors and Global Capability Centres are currently being developed to support and accelerate this growth.
