Karnataka Approves Science Centre & Planetarium Near Hampi

The Karnataka government's tourism department has approved the allocation of 10 acres of land in Kamalapura village, near Hampi in Vijayanagar district, for the development of a science centre and planetarium. This project, spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology under the Scheme for Promotion of Culture of Science (SPoCS), aims to enhance scientific education and boost tourism in the region.

The land allocation was officially confirmed, with the Vijayanagar District Deputy Commissioner being notified on March 24, 2025. Construction will begin after obtaining a no-objection certificate (NoC) from the Forest Department and securing approval from the district-level tourism development committee. The planetarium will feature a 12-meter nanoseam dome, one of the largest in Karnataka.

This Rs 50 crore initiative will include a science centre, science park, and a medicinal plant garden. The science centre will host interactive exhibits, advanced laboratories, and a research wing to encourage hands-on learning. The planetarium will offer immersive astronomical shows and celestial simulations aimed at inspiring students and visitors. Additionally, the medicinal plant garden will promote traditional knowledge and foster collaboration among researchers, academics, students, and pharmacists for conservation and science communication.

Science and Technology Minister NS Boseraju confirmed the state's commitment to expanding science education, stating, "We will establish similar centres and planetariums in Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Yadgir districts. Hampi, being a major tourism hub in northern Karnataka, attracts a large number of students, and we have planned an extensive planetarium here."
