IndiGrid Infrastructure Trust has successfully commissioned a 180 MW/360 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Gujarat, marking a significant addition to India’s grid-scale energy storage capacity.
Announced on 12 May 2026, the project has been developed through its subsidiary Gujarat BESS in collaboration with EnerGrid. The standalone facility, located at a GETCO substation in Charal, forms part of a larger 250 MW state program aimed at improving grid stability and enabling peak-load management.
The project was awarded through a competitive bidding process conducted by Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited in 2024, at a tariff of ₹449,996 per MW per month, with expected annual revenues exceeding ₹97 crore. Financing was supported by the International Finance Corporation, which provided USD 55 million through non-convertible debentures, including USD 38.5 million from its own account and USD 16.5 million from the Clean Technology Fund.
The BESS facility is designed for dual-cycle daily operations, helping integrate renewable energy into the grid while reducing transmission constraints and improving system flexibility. The commissioning reinforces IndiGrid’s expansion into clean energy infrastructure and supports Gujarat’s goal of achieving 100 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, representing one of India’s largest single-site utility-scale storage deployments.
