India has officially launched a Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme to enhance transparency, traceability, and credibility in the production of green hydrogen. Announced on April 29, 2025, by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, the initiative establishes a formal certification framework that supports both domestic use and global trade of clean hydrogen fuel.
Initially, the scheme applies to companies that have secured government incentives through various green hydrogen production programs. However, exporters who have not received such incentives are currently excluded—indicating a phased rollout that may expand to include more participants in the future.
A key feature of the framework is the materiality threshold: any emission source contributing 1% or more to total emissions must be accounted for, in line with India’s national green hydrogen guidelines. This ensures comprehensive emissions tracking, bolstering the scheme’s environmental integrity.
To support flexible project execution, producers are permitted to use renewable electricity transmitted through either dedicated or shared lines. This provision broadens access to clean energy sources, accommodating regional infrastructure variations.
The certification program is a critical step under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to position India as a global leader in the production, consumption, and export of green hydrogen.
