Hindustan Zinc Goes Green: Powers Up with New Solar Project

Hindustan Zinc has launched the first phase of renewable energy integration through Serentica Renewables, which began supplying energy from its 180 MW solar project. This initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable operations for the company.

The renewable energy is being utilized for Hindustan Zinc's business units in Rajasthan, aligning with the company’s power delivery agreements with Serentica. These agreements cover the supply of 450 MW of round-the-clock power, which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 2.7 million MT.

Currently, Hindustan Zinc has a captive solar power capacity of 40.70 MW, with the majority of its power still coming from conventional fuel sources. This new venture aims to diversify and increase the renewable portion of its energy mix.

Vedanta-owned Hindustan Zinc is set on an ambitious path to cut approximately 0.45 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. This aligns with their broader goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 or earlier, demonstrating their commitment to proactive climate action.

This move reflects a growing trend in the industry towards renewable energy adoption, as evidenced by other significant projects and investments in the sector, such as Adani Green Energy and REC’s recent green loans and solar projects.
