Green Light for Mohali-Rajpura Rail Project: ₹203 Crore Allocated

In a significant development for Punjab’s railway infrastructure, the Central government has approved the long-awaited Mohali-Rajpura railway line project, allocating a budget of ₹202.99 crore. The 24-kilometre line will connect Mohali to Rajpura via Banur, offering improved access to key destinations including Bathinda, Abohar, Jind, and Rohtak.

The project also includes a 5-kilometre spur at Rajpura to facilitate smoother train operations and eliminate the need for engine reversals on routes to Chandigarh. This addition is expected to enhance both passenger convenience and freight efficiency.

Former Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur announced the approval, calling it a “major gift from the Centre to Punjab” and highlighting its potential to boost connectivity for commuters and industries in the Malwa region.

Initially sanctioned in 2017, the project had been stalled due to administrative and logistical hurdles. Its inclusion in the Northern Railways’ 2025–26 new line projects has now revived its prospects. The Centre has directed Indian Railways to initiate expressions of interest for construction and related works, renewing optimism among local residents and businesses.
