The long-awaited widening of the Mananchira–Vellimadukunnu road in Kozhikode is set to begin on June 16, with Public Works Minister PA Mohamed Riyas scheduled to inaugurate the first phase. The initial 5.32-km stretch, extending from Mananchira to Malapparamba, will be developed at a cost of ₹79.90 crore. Land acquisition for this section has been completed and handed over to Midland Contracting, the firm executing the project.
The road is part of the larger City Road Improvement Project, with a total estimated cost of ₹481.94 crore. Of this, ₹344.5 crore has already been allocated for land acquisition, while ₹137.44 crore has received administrative approval for construction.
The 24-meter-wide road will feature concrete drainage, two-meter-wide footpaths on both sides, a two-meter-wide central median with streetlights, 21 bus stops, seven bus bays, a foot overbridge near the Civil Station, and traffic signals at major junctions. To minimize daytime traffic disruption, drainage work has already begun during night hours.
Meanwhile, the Mananchira–Vellimadukunnu Road Action Committee has called for tenders to be issued for the remaining three-kilometer stretch from Malapparamba to Vellimadukunnu, which falls under NH-766. However, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has yet to announce any development plans for this section.
