The Water Resources Department (WRD) of Goa announced that construction of the new barrage across the Chapora River at Sal in Bicholim has reached 50% completion and is on track for commissioning by March 2026.
The ₹300 crore project aims to supply an additional 250 million litres per day (MLD) of raw water, significantly enhancing Goa’s water availability, particularly during the summer months. The new structure will help maintain consistent water levels in the Amthane Dam, which serves Bardez, Pernem, and parts of Bicholim. At present, the Assonora Water Treatment Plant, which depends on Amthane, often experiences supply constraints.
In addition to boosting water supply, the new barrage will mitigate flooding in Sal village, a recurring issue caused by the narrow passage in the existing structure. Incidents like the July 2021 floods are expected to be eliminated once the project is complete. After the new barrage becomes operational, the old structure will be dismantled to ensure uninterrupted water flow during the monsoon season.
