Adani Power Ltd, the country’s largest private-sector thermal power producer with an installed capacity of over 18 GW, is preparing the groundwork for a potential entry into nuclear energy. The company is currently focusing on land aggregation, corporate structuring, and regulatory preparedness to enable rapid expansion once policy clarity emerges.
Speaking during an investor call, CEO S. B. Khyalia said the company is positioning itself ahead of formal guidelines from the government. He noted that while rules are yet to be notified, Adani Power is identifying suitable sites and applying for necessary approvals so it can move quickly when the regulatory framework is finalized.
Khyalia highlighted that the immediate priority is site identification and readiness, ensuring the company can scale efficiently once there is clarity on project size and capacity norms.
The company also made it clear that it does not plan to convert existing thermal power plants for nuclear use. Instead, it intends to pursue dedicated greenfield developments, indicating a strategy centered on building new, purpose-built nuclear facilities rather than repurposing current assets.
