The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has initiated work on a long-pending ₹191-crore sewage infrastructure project in Behrampur, nearly three years after its approval.
Designed to manage the increasing waste load from Gurugram’s rapidly expanding sectors, the project includes the construction of a 100 million litres per day (MLD) sewage treatment plant (STP) and a 400 MLD main pumping station. The new STP will incorporate a biogas-based power unit to help offset operational costs and is expected to be completed within two years.
Currently, only 30% of Behrampur’s existing 170 MLD treatment capacity meets tertiary treatment standards. As part of the upgrade, the existing 120 MLD STP will also be modernized to reduce Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels from 30 mg/L to 10 mg/L, enabling safe reuse of treated water for agriculture, construction, and groundwater recharge.
The project has gained urgency due to mounting public concerns over open sewage dumping, driven by inadequate sewer connectivity in fast-urbanizing areas along the Southern Peripheral Road and Golf Course Extension Road. The infrastructure upgrade is expected to significantly improve wastewater management and environmental outcomes in the region.
