The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has initiated efforts to explore the feasibility of ropeway-based transport systems at major tourist destinations in Tamil Nadu, including Mahabalipuram, Ooty, and Kodaikanal.
This initiative follows a state budget announcement aimed at enhancing tourism infrastructure and introducing innovative, eco-friendly mobility solutions in high-footfall heritage and hill locations. A key proposal under consideration is a 2-km aerial ropeway in Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its ancient rock-cut temples and sculptures. The proposed ropeway would connect the new bus terminal to the Shore Temple, offering tourists a scenic and efficient transit option while alleviating ground-level traffic congestion.
CMRL has floated Expressions of Interest (EOIs) inviting consultants to conduct detailed feasibility studies, including assessments of route alignment, technical and environmental viability, and cost estimates. Similar ropeway systems are being evaluated for Ooty and Kodaikanal, where traffic bottlenecks during peak seasons impact visitor experience and local infrastructure.
In addition to tourist locations, CMRL is exploring ropeway connectivity in Chennai’s urban corridors, particularly in IT and coastal zones. Proposed routes include a 1.7-km link from Taramani MRTS to Kandanchavadi Metro, with a further 1-km extension to Palavakkam along the East Coast Road, aimed at improving last-mile connectivity and easing urban mobility.
