Elevating SPR: Gurugram's Traffic Solution Takes Flight

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is set to construct a six-lane elevated road along a 5.5 km stretch of the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), between Vatika Chowk and NH-8. Modeled on the Dwarka Expressway, the project aims to create a signal-free corridor connecting Delhi with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.

A consultant was appointed earlier this year to prepare the detailed project report (DPR). The proposed elevated road will feature multiple ramps to facilitate smooth entry and exit, and is designed to accommodate future traffic demands. “Detailed deliberation is currently going on... The corridor will be designed not just for today's needs, but for the mobility requirements of the future,” a senior GMDA official stated.

The corridor will seamlessly link NH-8 and the Dwarka Expressway via the existing cloverleaf interchange, extending to the Sohna highway (NH-248A) at Vatika Chowk. This will enable uninterrupted traffic flow from Shiv Murti in Delhi to NH-248A and vice versa.

Initially proposed in 2019, the SPR redevelopment plan underwent revisions after earlier versions were shelved. In July 2024, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini gave formal approval to the project. GMDA has earmarked ₹750 crore for the development — ₹620 crore for construction and ₹130 crore for land acquisition.
