Southern Railway has commissioned a modern multi-level vehicle parking facility at the Gandhi-Irwin Road entrance of Chennai Egmore railway station as part of the station’s ongoing ₹842 crore redevelopment project.
Developed to address persistent traffic congestion at one of Chennai’s busiest railway stations, the new parking structure has the capacity to accommodate nearly 200 cars and 100 two-wheelers.
The facility is equipped with several advanced features, including 22 electric vehicle charging stations, an automated parking management system, CCTV surveillance, and high-intensity lighting. Passenger amenities at the complex include public announcement systems, fire safety infrastructure, smart luggage lockers, restrooms, and refreshment kiosks.
The building also incorporates accessibility-focused infrastructure such as anti-skid parking surfaces and a 20-passenger elevator designed to support differently abled users.
Railway officials said the technology-enabled parking system is expected to ease vehicular congestion and improve traffic flow around the station precinct. Meanwhile, construction of another multi-level parking facility on the Poonamallee High Road side of the station is currently underway.
