Chennai's Green Giant: World's Largest Waste Facility Rises

In a groundbreaking move to tackle Chennai’s mounting waste crisis and promote circular economy principles, Singapore-based Blue Planet Environmental Solutions Pte Ltd is set to develop the world’s largest waste processing facility at Kodungaiyur in North Chennai.

This transformative project forms a core part of the Greater Chennai Corporation’s approved initiative to bio-mine the vast Kodungaiyur dumpyard. “We are clearing the landfill there. In the next three years, you’ll see the dumpyard disappear,” said Prashant Singh, Co-founder and CEO of Blue Planet, emphasizing the project's sweeping environmental goals.

The Kodungaiyur site holds an estimated 66 lakh cubic meters of legacy waste, accumulated over decades and posing severe environmental and health risks to surrounding communities. Through advanced bio-mining techniques, Blue Planet aims to reclaim and rehabilitate the area, significantly improving local living conditions.

Beyond landfill remediation, Blue Planet is collaborating with regional farmers to convert agricultural residues—such as paddy stubble—into compressed biogas (CBG). This effort not only mitigates crop burning but also produces clean, renewable energy, highlighting a circular, sustainable approach to waste management.

Once operational, this facility will mark a major milestone in India’s environmental journey—propelling North Chennai to the global forefront of innovative, sustainable waste management.
