Construction of the Chennai Port–Maduravoyal Elevated Corridor has gained momentum, with authorities aiming to complete the long-pending project by November 2027. The project is expected to significantly improve cargo evacuation from Chennai Port, streamline freight movement, and reduce traffic congestion across key urban corridors in Chennai.
The 20.5-km four-lane elevated expressway, being developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), will provide a dedicated route for container traffic between Chennai Port and the region’s highway network. The corridor is intended to strengthen export-import logistics by enabling faster and more efficient movement of cargo while minimizing delays caused by urban traffic. Initially conceived more than a decade ago, the project experienced prolonged delays due to legal challenges, environmental concerns, and subsequent design revisions. With revised alignments and necessary approvals now in place, construction activities have resumed at an accelerated pace.
Upon completion, the elevated corridor is expected to divert a substantial volume of heavy truck traffic away from congested city roads, particularly in areas surrounding the port, thereby improving traffic flow and urban mobility. The project will also enhance connectivity to industrial hubs and hinterland markets across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states, reducing transit times and improving logistics efficiency for exporters, importers, and freight operators.
To meet the targeted completion schedule, authorities have adopted parallel construction packages, strengthened project monitoring mechanisms, and initiated supporting works, including utility relocation and drainage infrastructure upgrades.
