Bridging the Gap: Ghatkopar Gets a ₹350 Crore Cable-Stayed Link

Vehicle movement along the congested Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road (AGLR) is set to improve significantly with the construction of a cable-stayed bridge connecting Ghatkopar East and West, intersecting Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg.

The project, a joint initiative between the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), will replace a 45-year-old Railway Over Bridge (ROB) that was declared structurally unfit in 2018. The new six-lane structure, measuring 216 metres long and 11 metres wide, will be Mumbai’s first cable-stayed ROB in a suburban area. With a project cost of ₹350 crore, completion is targeted for 2027.

To ensure minimal disruption, construction is being carried out in two phases, allowing one arm of the bridge to remain operational while the other is rebuilt. Once completed, the bridge is expected to significantly reduce travel time, ease congestion on LBS Marg, and enhance east-west suburban connectivity.

Designed with aesthetic lighting, footpaths, and dedicated service roads for pedestrians and emergency vehicles, the bridge also aims to visually transform the area. It will become Mumbai’s third major cable-stayed bridge, following the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and Reay Road Bridge, complementing the WEH-Andheri Metro One link.
