BESS Boom: India's Energy Storage Takes Center Stage

Three leading infrastructure and renewable energy companies—Tata Power, Acme Solar, and PNC Infratech—have signed agreements with NHPC for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, supporting India’s renewable energy expansion and grid stabilization initiatives.

Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, announced the signing of its first Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) with NHPC. The project involves setting up a 30 MW / 120 MWh BESS at a 220 kV substation in Area Code, Kerala. Awarded under NHPC’s BESS Tranche-I tender for the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), the project will be implemented under a 12-year BESPA and is expected to be completed within 15 months. Tata Power noted that this project marks TPREL’s entry into utility-scale battery energy storage solutions.

Acme Solar, through its subsidiaries, signed BESPAs for two standalone BESS projects in Andhra Pradesh with a combined capacity of 275 MW / 550 MWh. The contracts include a 50 MW / 100 MWh system at a tariff of ₹2,10,000 per MW/month and a 225 MW / 450 MWh system at ₹2,22,000 per MW/month, both secured via e-reverse auction.

PNC Infratech also signed an agreement for a 300 MW Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS)-connected renewable project with an integrated energy storage component, further contributing to national energy transition goals.

These developments underscore India’s commitment to enhancing grid resilience and integrating large-scale renewable energy through advanced storage technologies.
