Bengaluru Lakes Tapped for 20 MW Floating Solar Project

Doddabommasandra and Rachenahalli lakes in Bengaluru’s Yelahanka zone have been selected for the installation of floating photovoltaic (FPV) solar panels, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar informed the Karnataka Assembly.

In response to a query from Shivajinagar MLA Rizwan Arshad, Shivakumar stated that these two lakes were identified to host solar panels capable of generating 1 MW of electricity. He added that by covering approximately 10% of the lake surface, the combined potential output could reach up to 20 MW.

The project has received clearance from the Karnataka Tank Conservation and Development Authority (KTCDA) and will be implemented by the Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited (KREDL).

According to the Deputy CM, electricity generated from the FPVs will help maintain the lakes, power surrounding lamp posts, and reduce water evaporation, contributing to both sustainability and conservation.

While no specific budget has been allocated yet by the state government or BBMP, Shivakumar clarified that the initiative is in its initial stages. Government sources indicated that, if successful, this model could be replicated at other lakes across Karnataka to promote renewable energy and enhance lake management.
