Assam's Waste Warriors: State to Open 13 New Plants by 2025

The Assam government plans to operationalize 13 new solid waste management (SWM) plants by December 2025, aiming for full coverage of all 96 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 by early 2027.

At present, the state runs 10 SWM plants with a combined capacity of 458 tonnes per day (TPD). The upcoming facilities will add 650 TPD of processing capacity, significantly enhancing waste management infrastructure. Key projects include a 130 TPD plant under the Tinsukia Municipal Board, and 100 TPD plants under both Jorhat and Kharupetia Municipal Boards. The largest existing plants are in North Lakhimpur (125 TPD) and Dibrugarh (100 TPD).

This expansion is part of a broader strategy to close processing gaps, promote decentralized waste management, and adopt scientific, sustainable practices. Officials report ongoing improvements in waste collection, segregation, and disposal across ULBs.

The new infrastructure is expected to reduce landfill burden, boost recycling rates, and better manage the waste generated by growing urban populations—contributing to cleaner, healthier cities across Assam.
