Arumbakkam Metro Station to Get Major Commercial Makeover

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to commence construction of a multi-storey building at Arumbakkam Metro Station as part of its strategy to boost non-fare revenue and improve commuter amenities. The development will be located on a 1,660.34 sq. m. plot behind the station, adjacent to the existing parking area.

The proposed structure will feature a basement, stilt level with a four-tier mechanical car parking system, and seven upper floors. Of these, four floors will be designated for commercial use—accommodating retail stores and food outlets—while the remaining three floors will house office spaces, according to CMRL officials.

The project is part of CMRL’s larger initiative to integrate commercial infrastructure with metro stations, enhancing both financial sustainability and user convenience. If the contract is awarded within the next three months, the construction is expected to be completed within two years.

Similar commercial developments are planned at other metro stations, including Ekkatuthangal and Saidapet, as part of CMRL’s transit-oriented development approach.
