AP's Green Hydrogen Valley Roadmap Targets 1.5 MT Production

Andhra Pradesh has unveiled its Green Hydrogen Valley Roadmap, outlining an ambitious plan to become a national leader in green hydrogen production.

Under the roadmap, the state targets the production of 1.5 million tonnes (MT) of green hydrogen annually by 2029 and aims to establish 2 GW of electrolyser manufacturing capacity by 2027. At the inaugural meeting of the Green Hydrogen Valley Advisory Board, Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand and NITI Aayog Member V.K. Saraswat highlighted Andhra Pradesh’s strong natural advantages — including rich biomass resources, abundant renewable energy potential, and a 974-km coastline — referencing the successful commissioning of the 1 GW pumped storage plant in Kurnool as a key milestone.

The initiative will integrate green hydrogen into core industrial sectors such as steel, fertilizers, and ports, while also enhancing farmer incomes and creating employment opportunities. The Central Government, under the National Hydrogen Mission, will provide incentives to industries adopting green hydrogen technologies.

NTPC Green Energy Ltd. (NGEL) is set to play a pivotal role, with plans to produce 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen per day using 20 GW of renewable energy, backed by an investment of Rs 1.85 lakh crore. This initiative is expected to reduce dependence on energy imports and promote domestic renewable energy use.

Additionally, AP GreenCo Co-AGM Ram Kumar announced plans to convert the NPCL fertilizer plant in Kakinada into a one-million-tonne ammonia facility, further strengthening the state’s green hydrogen ecosystem. Several MoUs related to green hydrogen projects are expected to be signed during the CII conference in Visakhapatnam on November 14–15.
