Andhra Pradesh Pushes for Polavaram Completion by 2027

The Andhra Pradesh government has reiterated its commitment to completing the Polavaram Irrigation Project by December 2027, with the potential for an early completion by June 2027, according to G. Sai Prasad, Special Chief Secretary for Water Resources.

Speaking at a District Collectors’ Conference, Prasad emphasized that achieving a drought-free Andhra Pradesh remains a top priority. He highlighted the need to ensure adequate water availability across sectors, especially in the face of increasing climate variability, including irregular rainfall and cloudbursts.

Currently, 89% of the state's reservoirs are at full capacity. The government, in collaboration with the Union Government, is working to revive 38,457 medium irrigation tanks, with 5,815 already restored. Special attention is being given to 7,762 villages where groundwater levels have dropped below eight metres, indicating critical water stress.

In parallel, seven irrigation projects worth ₹9,221 crore are underway to stabilize over 3.21 lakh acres of ayacut. The Polavaram Left Main Canal, a key component of the broader project, is expected to be completed by October, extending water supply up to Anakapalli and enhancing agricultural resilience in the region.
