Water Resources Minister Nimmala Rama Naidu has assured that the Veligonda Project will be completed and water supply will commence by 2026.
While reviewing the project’s progress during a video conference with officials and representatives of the executing agencies, the Minister set firm timelines for completion. He stressed that the lining work of Tunnel-2 must be finished by June 2026. Of the total seven km tunnel length, around 3.2 km of lining has already been completed, with the remaining 3.6 km targeted for completion by June.
The work had slowed in November due to Cyclone Montha, which led to water ingress into the tunnels. However, operations resumed in December after dewatering activities were completed.
Currently, four gantry cranes are deployed for the tunnel lining work, and the Minister directed officials to deploy an additional crane to ensure adherence to the schedule. He also reviewed the issue of a stuck tunnel boring machine (TBM) and assured that appropriate action would be taken in line with the recommendations of the Technical Committee.
