Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) soon for the proposed extension of the Ganga Expressway from Meerut to Haridwar.
The proposed six-lane corridor, covering nearly 140 km, is aimed at improving connectivity between two major religious centres and enhancing access to important spiritual destinations across northern and eastern India. The project received momentum after Narendra Modi announced the Haridwar extension during the inauguration of the Ganga Expressway in Hardoi district on April 29.
Officials said both states have reached an in-principle agreement to develop the extension through the Amroha–Bijnor route. Following the signing of the MoU, authorities are expected to finalise the division of responsibilities related to construction, funding, land acquisition, and compensation policies.
The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) has already started preliminary work for the project, including land surveys and the collection of settlement maps from Amroha and Bijnor districts.
The proposed extension is expected to reduce travel time between Prayagraj and Haridwar from the current 11–13 hours to around seven to eight hours. Officials said the corridor will strengthen regional connectivity, support religious tourism, improve access between Mahakumbh host cities, and contribute to economic and infrastructure development across the connected regions.
