Trackside Treats: Premium Dining Hits Three More Kerala Stations

The Indian Railways’ Thiruvananthapuram division under Southern Railway is set to introduce premium dine-in restaurants at Tripunithura Railway Station, Aluva Railway Station and Alappuzha Railway Station following the positive response to similar outlets at Ernakulam Junction Railway Station and Ernakulam Town Railway Station.

The move comes amid increasing passenger traffic and the growing importance of these stations within Kerala’s expanding rail network. Railway officials said the initiative aims to improve passenger amenities while meeting rising commuter demand at major transit hubs.

According to railway officials, Tripunithura Railway Station is emerging as a key link between rail and metro connectivity and is expected to develop into a multimodal transport hub under a proposed mini-hub project by the Tripunithura Municipality. The auction for the premium branded outlet at the station is scheduled for Tuesday.

Aluva Railway Station, one of the busiest railway stations in the region, is also expected to attract strong demand due to its seamless connectivity with rail services and KSRTC bus operations. The auction for the outlet there is scheduled for Thursday.

At Alappuzha Railway Station, the proposed restaurant will specialise in premium seafood and traditional Kerala cuisine, offering travellers an authentic local dining experience and catering especially to tourism-driven passenger traffic.

For years, passengers at stations such as Tripunithura Railway Station had limited access to food and other amenities, with only bottled water available on platforms. Residents’ associations have welcomed the move as a long-awaited improvement in commuter facilities. V C Jayendran, secretary of the Tripunithura Rajanagari Union of Residents Associations, said the initiative would spare passengers the inconvenience of stepping outside stations in search of food.

Officials said Tripunithura Railway Station currently generates monthly revenue exceeding ₹1 lakh, underlining its growing economic importance and supporting the push towards premium passenger services.

The Thiruvananthapuram division said the initiative is intended to transform passenger waiting time into a more comfortable and enjoyable experience through partnerships with branded food outlets. The new restaurants are expected to provide hygienic, high-quality dining spaces comparable to city restaurants, further enhancing station infrastructure and overall passenger satisfaction.
