High Voltage, Higher Efficiency: SCR’s ₹285 Cr Rail Upgrade

Indian Railways has approved the modernization of the electric traction system on the Mahbubnagar–Secunderabad–Medchal section of South Central Railway, a strategically important route within the nation’s High-Density Network (HDN).

The project, spanning approximately 141 route kilometres across Telangana, will be executed at an estimated cost of ₹285.01 crore. As part of the upgrade, the existing 1×25 kV traction system will be replaced with an advanced 2×25 kV traction system, enhancing power transmission capacity and operational efficiency.

The upgraded system is expected to deliver a more reliable and stable power supply, improving the safety, smoothness and overall reliability of train operations. It will also support the growing demand for rail traffic on the corridor by enabling higher train throughput and reducing operational constraints.

The Mahbubnagar–Secunderabad–Medchal section is a vital link on the Dharmavaram–Dhone–Mahbubnagar–Secunderabad–Medchal–Mudkhed–Indore–Ajmer corridor, which carries substantial passenger and freight traffic across multiple regions.

Upon completion, the project is expected to significantly enhance freight-handling capacity and operational performance, facilitating faster and more dependable movement of goods. The upgrade is also anticipated to strengthen regional trade, support industrial development and contribute to broader economic growth.

According to Indian Railways, the initiative reflects its ongoing commitment to developing a modern, energy-efficient and future-ready rail network that improves passenger services while boosting freight logistics on critical transportation corridors.
