Supercritical Success: Panki's 660MW Unit Sets New Standards.

The newly commissioned 660-MW unit at Panki Power Plant in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, is set to begin operations following the successful completion of trial runs. Developed with a capital investment of Rs 6,700 crore, the facility underwent its initial trial on February 21, 2025, successfully achieving its target output.

Chief General Manager Govind Kumar Mishra stated, “We aimed to operate the unit at full capacity—660 megawatts—for 72 hours, optimizing technical parameters and oil usage.” Surpassing expectations, the unit ran continuously for 87 hours, generating 58 million units of electricity at an average output of 666 MW, meeting commercial production standards.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for this unit in 2019. Originally slated for completion in January 2022, the project faced delays due to the pandemic. Now operational, it is expected to strengthen the region’s power supply.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) secured the Rs 4,400 crore contract from Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam for constructing this supercritical thermal power plant.
