Subansiri Surge: NHPC Fires Up Unit 4 of India’s 2,000 MW Giant

NHPC has commenced commercial operations of Unit 4 of the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, marking another important milestone in one of India’s largest hydropower developments.

The unit began supplying electricity commercially from 08 May 2026, as part of the project’s phased commissioning plan. Developed near North Lakhimpur on the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border, the project is being executed by NHPC at an estimated cost of around Rs 27,000 crore.

The plant consists of eight generating units of 250 MW each and operates as a run-of-the-river hydroelectric scheme with storage on the Subansiri River. With Unit 4 now operational, half of the project’s total capacity has been brought online, contributing to India’s renewable energy output and supporting grid stability. The remaining units are expected to be commissioned in subsequent phases.

Once fully operational, the project is expected to play a significant role in strengthening clean energy generation, meeting regional electricity demand, and enhancing energy security in northeastern India, while also supporting India’s broader transition toward sustainable power sources.
