PGCIL Secures ₹1,800 Crore Tamil Nadu Grid Upgrade

Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL) has secured two major transmission upgrade projects in Tamil Nadu under the regulated tariff mechanism (RTM) framework, with a combined estimated investment exceeding ₹1,800 crore.

The projects were recommended by the National Committee on Transmission (NCT) during a recent meeting.

The first project involves upgrading the 400 kV Udumalpet–Madurai transmission line from a single-circuit to a double-circuit (quad) configuration at a cost of ₹643 crore. Operational since 1993, the line is approaching its surge impedance loading (SIL) limit. The upgrade is expected to facilitate the integration of growing renewable energy capacity in the state and is slated for completion within 30 months.

The second project entails reconductoring two 400 kV double-circuit lines — Tirunelveli–Udumalpet and Pugalur–Madurai — using high-temperature low-sag (HTLS) conductors to support a transmission capacity of 2,100 MVA. This project, estimated at ₹1,193.5 crore, is targeted for completion within 24 months.
