Khattar: Bihar to Host New Nuclear Power Plant and SMR

Union Energy Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced on June 24, 2025, that the Central government has approved the establishment of a nuclear power plant in Bihar—a major milestone in strengthening the state’s energy infrastructure. The announcement was made at a press conference in Patna following a meeting with energy ministers from Eastern states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.

As part of India’s broader national energy strategy, the Minister also disclosed plans to deploy six Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) across the country, with one earmarked for Bihar. SMRs are next-generation nuclear reactors designed for enhanced safety, greater flexibility, and minimal land requirements, making them particularly well-suited for regions new to nuclear energy infrastructure.

“The Central government is fully committed to supporting the Bihar government in implementing this project,” Khattar said, emphasizing the initiative's role in promoting regional energy growth.

This development marks Bihar’s entry into India’s civil nuclear energy program and could significantly boost the state’s energy reliability and industrial appeal. The exact site and implementation timeline for the plant are yet to be finalized.
