The Kamala Hydroelectric Project, approved by the Public Investment Board (PIB) on January 8, will be developed in Arunachal Pradesh at an estimated cost of ₹26,069.50 crore.
With an installed capacity of 1,720 MW, the project is expected to generate around 6,870 million units of renewable energy annually, supporting India’s Net Zero emissions target for 2070. In addition to power generation, the project will contribute to flood moderation in the Brahmaputra Valley. The development timeline is estimated at eight years and includes the construction of a 216-metre-high dam and an underground powerhouse.
NHPC will hold a 74% equity stake in the project, while the Government of Arunachal Pradesh will own the remaining 26%. The financing structure follows a 70:30 debt-to-equity ratio, supplemented by grants and reimbursements from both the central and state governments.
Commenting on the development, a spokesperson noted that the project is expected to deliver significant regional benefits, including employment generation and infrastructure development, alongside enhanced power generation capacity.
