Powering Up: North Karanpura Plant Achieves Full 1980 MW Capacity

NTPC’s North Karanpura Super Thermal Power Plant in Tandwa, Jharkhand, reached full operational capacity at midnight on Sunday, June 16, 2025, with the commissioning of its third 660 MW unit. With three units of 660 MW each, the 1,980 MW plant is set to supply power to Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, and Sikkim.

This project marks a significant milestone as India’s first supercritical thermal power plant to incorporate a large-scale air-cooled condenser system—cutting water usage to just one-third of that required by conventional water-cooled systems. Strategically located near coal reserves, the pit-head plant enhances fuel efficiency and reduces logistical costs.

S.K. Suar, Executive Director of the plant, said, “The commissioning of Unit-3 is a proud moment for all of us. It represents the culmination of dedicated efforts, technical excellence, and strong teamwork by our entire project team.”

NTPC continues to uphold its commitment to providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy, while maintaining a strong focus on environmental responsibility and community development.
