Chandrapur Thermal Power Gets ₹9,892 Cr Modernization Plan

The Maharashtra government has proposed the installation of a new 800 MW power generation unit based on ultra-supercritical technology at the Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station (CSTPS), involving an estimated investment of ₹9,892 crore.

The proposal was discussed during the ongoing Winter Session of the state legislature in Nagpur, amid growing reliance on renewable energy during daytime hours and thermal power to meet night-time electricity demand. Chandrapur MLA Kishor Jorgewar pointed out that several existing units at CSTPS operate on outdated technology, limiting operational flexibility and contributing significantly to air pollution. He emphasised that replacing ageing units with ultra-supercritical technology is essential to enhance efficiency, reduce coal consumption, and lower emissions.

Responding on behalf of the government, Minister Meghna Bordikar confirmed that preparatory work for the new unit is in progress. She added that future thermal power projects in the state would adopt advanced and cleaner technologies to ensure reduced pollution levels alongside a reliable power supply.
