VOC Port to Develop 1MW Green Hydrogen Plant with NTPC

In a major step towards advancing its green energy goals, V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi announced plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with state-owned energy major NTPC to develop a 1 MW green hydrogen production facility.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in the port’s broader sustainability roadmap. Complementing this, the port is engaged in green corridor studies in collaboration with international partners, including the European Union, Port of Singapore, Port of Rotterdam, and Deendayal Port Authority. These efforts aim to establish cleaner, more efficient maritime routes.

The port is also in talks with multiple stakeholders to explore the development of a dedicated biofuel corridor and to accelerate green hydrogen-related projects.

On the domestic front, several eco-friendly initiatives are already underway. The port’s administrative building is being upgraded to meet green certification standards. A 1 MW solar power project is currently under implementation, and plans are in motion for a 2 MW battery energy storage system to improve energy efficiency. Additionally, tenders have been initiated for a 6 MW wind power project and green methanol bunkering facilities, addressing the growing need for sustainable marine fuels.

Together, these initiatives reflect V.O. Chidambaranar Port’s strong commitment to reducing its environmental impact and establishing itself as a pioneer in India’s green maritime transformation.
